And more recently a couple of things have had me thinking about this Why Question in terms of every individual. Why do we do what we do?
Firstly I have been researching for a presentation to a group of University Students looking at a career in Consulting when they graduate soon…. the topic they have asked me to cover is “Leadership and Your Personal Brand”.
This had me thinking about Leaders and the Personal Brand attributes needed to become a successful leader which inevitably lead me to the need to be Passionate if you wish to inspire others. …….. but to be Passionate it is vital, I think, to know Why you do what you do.
Planning, training, mentoring, strategising, focussing etc etc are all things expected of us in business and in life these days.
And of course we all spend lots of time telling people in business especially about us and what we do and why we do it – Missions, Visions, Passions etc – and above all why we are the person for whatever is needed.
But how much time do we spending Being what we say we are?
Some years ago I had a saying that I promoted to all of my clients –
BE What you Say and Say what you BE.
…….and when all else fails BE YOU… you should at least aim to become good at that!!
And that generally involves telling the truth to the best of your ability as everybody appreciates the truth ………Although I think we all know any one who says they never Lie is Liar. At the very least we tell the occasional Lie to protect others and their feelings and reputations.
Even the most honest, loyal faithful husband will lie to his wife if he needs to …………..when asked “Does My Bum Look BIG in this ?” I am sure he will if necessary Lie or at least avoid the question by saying “Darling you have a great arse!!” Continue reading The Importance of Being
When you go to a store to buy something do you ever consider how many hours it took to make it?
When you are comparing an Apple iPad with a Samsung Galaxy Pad do you think about the production process or are you more concerned about the features and the relevance to you and the cost and its affordability to you?
Are you at all concerned about the number of hours taken to manufacture it or the hourly rate paid to the workers who developed it? …. Of Course Not!… You either want it because it suits you need and budget or you Don’t.
In other words is it about the value it brings NOT the time taken to make it or cost of overall manufacture when you make a purchase.
So why is it when it comes to services its all about the time taken?? …irrespective of value or even efficiency – the way the time is spent.
We live in a world of increasing disruptive innovation so it wasn’t surprising that some years ago the Australian Govt decided that the Education System was in need of an overhaul if Australia was to be the Clever country of the future. But then they appointed a well respected Commercial Lawyer – David Gonski – to head the review. Not surprisingly they got a financial solution to a massive structural problem.
More money for facilities, for teachers, smaller class sizes etc.
But they missed the point the world has changed since our current post Industrial Revolution – Education for all system was invented….. So we are still teaching kids to remember stuff they can Google if they ever need to know it.
No hint of Disprutive Innovation just spending ore money on the same system and expecting better results. But can we ever expect real innovation if we rely on the Government, Bureaucrats or Academics. Real Innovation comes from those who are not satisfied with way it is and see a better way. The story begins in the late 70s a time when change in the world was about to really accelerate.
The PC and the Fax Machine had not yet been invented … a geek called Bill Gates had just started Microsoft, Computers were called Mainframes they cost a million dollars and occupied large rooms with sophisticated air-conditioning and fire proofing.
I recently modified the saying – “If you always do what you always did …you will always get what you always got…… ” to
If you always do what you always did you will always get what you always got…….but not for much longer
The rate of change is so rapid now that even standing still is a bit like going backwards used to be. As such it is more important than ever that people in business are not only open to change but ready to embrace it and leverage it.
Quite often when I talk to people and they tell me about the things that used to work for them or still do ….. or even perhaps they plan to go back to….I ask them if we are talking BF — Before FaceBook…. less than 10 years ago!!
I think BF is a great milestone as it is more recent than most think and it was a defining moment in terms of the way people in general see and use computers…and communications in general.
When I first heard the term Prisoner of The Proven it really resonated with me as it summed up so much of what I hear from people who don”t want to accept the world is moving rapidly and the things that used to work may not work for much longer. Continue reading Are you a Prisoner of the Proven?
